Daniel P. O’Dea was born January 23, 1961, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Deadwood, SD, to Dean Patrick and Sally Mae (Sundstrom) O’Dea. While growing up in Whitewood he was a member of the boy scouts, and a very active member in 4-H as well as qualifying at state for bareback in 4-H. He was a member of Wrangler Riding club and spent a lot of time on horseback. He attended Whitewood Elementary School and later Sturgis Brown High School. He then attended Lake Area Vo-Tech in Watertown, becoming a certified welder.  He returned to the Northern Black Hills, where he worked as a welder at Hall & Clowser Machine in Spearfish, before going to work at Wharf.  He then worked at various firms as a heavy equipment operator, operating a rock crusher in quarries.  He was a proud member of the wagon train that went on the Centennial trail from Pierre to Deadwood in which took 2 weeks to get there driving his team of Percheron horses and a Studebaker Chuckwagon. He also did other wagon train rides from Newell to Nemo in which family members had joined for the ride.

He was a talker, folks said he was easy to talk to. He grew up on horses and enjoyed his time as a teamster.
