Deadwood City Commission denies bronze mandolin statue for new boutique hotel

DEADWOOD, S.D. – The Deadwood City Commission has denied a request by the owners of the new Rocksino by Hard Rock on the city’s historic Main Street.

The Hard Rock company had wanted to place the brand’s iconic guitar logo at the new boutique hotel.

Following the denial, the company offered a compromise – a bronze mandolin statue on city property. However, the city commission also had concerns about that.

Deadwood Mayor Dave Ruth says concerns with its proximity to an intersection and future plans to have statues of historic Deadwood characters posed problems.

City Commissioner Sharon Martinisko also says both the guitar logo and the proposed Mandolin statue would be outside of Deadwood’s historical branding, but the city is working with the Hard Rock to find another way to show off its brand.

Ruth says that includes smaller logos on the awnings and windows.

The Rocksino plans to be up and running by Aug.8, marking the moment with a guitar smash ribbon cutting.
