Deadwood to begin reopening process Thursday

DEADWOOD, S.D. – Deadwood’s Mayor broke a 2-2 tie and voted to begin reopening the northern hills town.

Mayor Dave Ruth Jr. says this will allow the economy to get moving again.

Beginning Thursday morning, May 7, Deadwood’s casinos will be among businesses that will be able to open their doors — as long as they follow Centers for Disease Control guidelines.

Mayor Ruth says in the end, “it’s up to everyone in the community to keep Deadwood safe.”

Ruth said not all businesses may open right away. He says some will need to take their time and make sure all the proper safety precautions are in place.

Deadwood’s casinos closed last month after a small spike in cases of COVID-19. However, since those initial 9 cases were reported — Lawrence County has not had another positive case.
