Debra K. Wanous

Debra K. Wanous, affectionately known as Debbie to her friends and loved ones, departed this world on July 31, 2024, after a lifetime of spreading joy and positivity. Born on May 19, 1958, in Rapid City, SD, Debbie’s journey came full circle as she passed away peacefully in her hometown, surrounded by the familiar comforts of the Black Hills she so dearly loved. Debbie’s life was one marked by a buoyant spirit and an unwavering kindness that touched the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her. She was the beloved wife of Rick Wanous, who stood by her as a testament to enduring love and partnership. Her brother, Jay and Janice Hrachovec, will remember her not just as a sister, but as a lifelong friend whose playful teasing was always a source of laughter and lightness in their lives.

A proud graduate of Rapid City Central High School and the National College of Business, Debbie carved out a career that was characterized by her gentle demeanor and an optimistic outlook. She served with dedication as a bank teller at Black Hills Federal Credit Union and later brought smiles to visitors as she worked in the gift shop at Marine Life Aquarium in Rapid City. In every role, Debbie was more than just an employee; she was a beacon of positivity, uplifting her colleagues and customers alike. Debbie’s zest for life was evident in her personal passions. An accomplished barrel racing competitor, she found freedom and exhilaration in the embrace of the sport she loved. Debbie was an avid reader, always keen to explore new worlds and ideas through the pages of a book. Her love for travel was boundless, with each cruise offering a new horizon to discover and the joy of creating lasting memories. Those who knew Debbie will remember her as the epitome of optimism. She embodied the words of Helen Keller, “Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence.” Debbie lived by this creed, her life a testament to the belief that a kind word and a gentle touch can move mountains. Debbie’s legacy is one of kindness and gentleness, a reminder that life’s beauty often lies in its simplicity. She approached every day with a smile that could light up the darkest of rooms and a warmth that could thaw the coldest of hearts. Her spirit was a constant source of motivation, inspiring those around her to live with love and to cherish every moment. In celebrating Debbie’s life, we are reminded that our time here is precious and that the impact we make on others is the true measure of our success.
