Department of Health reports 80 new COVID-19 cases, two new deaths

PIERRE, S.D. – After a couple days of only single digit increases, Pennington County saw a spike in COVID-19 cases Wednesday as 25 new positive tests were reported by the State Department of Health.

The 25 new cases in Pennington County were among 80 new cases statewide. Two new deaths were also reported today.

The new deaths reported are two men in the 70-79 age group. One was from Butte County and the other from Pennington County. The death in Butte County comes just a week after they recorded their first COVID-19 case.

Pennington County now has a cumulative total of 674 and there are 157 active cases – up 15 from Tuesday.

Oglala Lakota County saw an increase of 7 new cases, sending their cumulative total to 118 with 31 currently active.

Neither Meade nor Lawrence County reported any new cases today and Meade County had two new recoveries, giving them 5 active cases. Lawrence County has 2 active cases.

The statewide active caseload rose 14 to 878. There are 59 people currently hospitalized – down 3 from Tuesday.

The state’s death toll is now at 111 with the two new deaths reported today.
