STURGIS, S.D. – The Department of Transportation held a public open house last night in Sturgis to gather input and ideas for the Lazelle Street Corridor Study.
A corridor planning study is being performed for a portion of the US Highway 14 Alternate (US14A) / SD Highway 34 (SD34) corridor in Meade County, SD, also known as Lazelle Street in Sturgis.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate existing and future conditions of the corridor and potential improvements related to roadway conditions, traffic operations, and safety.
The D-O-T is looking at improving lane configurations, interchanges and possible changes where Avalanche Road meets Lazelle near I-90. That area is expected to grow significantly as new development emerges along Avalanche Road.
Steve Gramm is the D-O-T Planning Squad Leader. He says the width of Lazelle Street in Sturgis is among the challenges in their study because some businesses may have to give up right-of-way.
The South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) assembled a Study Advisory Team (SAT), comprised of representatives from SDDOT, City of Sturgis, Meade County, and Federal Highways Administration, to guide the development of the corridor study.
Comments and suggestions on the future of the corridor are being accepted through July 8th.
