STURGIS, S.D. – A thunderstorm brought heavy rain to the downtown Sturgis racetrack Sunday, delaying the inaugural Sturgis TT race.
However, once the rain moved out and the track dryers moved in, Sturgis successfully hosted its inaugural flat track race.
The races were delayed until 4:30, but good weather greeted spectators and racers the rest of the way.
Spectators gathered all around the race track, which began on Main Street, before going up second street, on to Sherman, through a dirt section set up in the First Interstate Bank parking lot, and back on to Main Street from Harley Davidson Way.
Sturgis Mayor Angela Wilkerson says “It was amzaing. I was in tears to see it all unfold. I don’t think it could have gone any better for the first year.”
To see the race finally get going and run successfully was a welcome sight for city officials, who have battled many elements the past year to make the Sturgis TT a reality.
Cameron Gray with American Flat Track and A.M.T. Racing said Friday they were excited to see the event become a reality in Sturgis and that racers were excited too.
The three classes of the event were Parts Unlimited AFT Singles, AFT AdventureTrackers and Mission AFT SuperTwins.
The FOX Television Network will broadcast the races next weekend on Saturday, August 17th at Noon.
