Douglas Early Bird opens Cross Country Season

BOX ELDER, S.D. – Area cross country athletes opened the 2024 cross country season at the Douglas Early Bird on Friday.

Peyton Van Deest of Spearfish won the girls race in a time of 20:05.79. Her teammate Kori Keil came in second with a time of 20:19.78.

Adison Armstrong of Rapid City Stevens placed third and Lia Mundt of Belle Fourche came in fourth.

Top placing Sturgis Scooper was Lucy Hamer in 8th place.

In the girls team standings, Spearfish was first with a 44, Rapid City Stevens was second with a 45 and Sturgis placed third with a 56.

In the boys race, Scooper Ty Petrocco captured first in a time of 16:34.67. Two Hill City athletes finished second and third. They were Tate Grabow in second and Brandon Escalante in third. Custer’s Sean Shipp finished in fourth.

Winning the team title was Rapid City Stevens with a 27. Philip was a distant second with a 76 and Spearfish placed third with a 79.

Stevens had eight runners finish in the top 20, led by Miles Brekhus in fifth place.
