STURGIS, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Transportation reports the first batch of numbers coming in from their traffic counters indicate the 2020 rally is down a little bit from last year.
Never an exact science, the DOT says their traffic counters, strategically placed at nine locations entering Sturgis, indicated down days on Friday and Saturday, with a small uptick on Sunday.
Friday’s numbers were 49,835 vehicles entering Sturgis – down 4.3-percent from the first Friday last year.
Saturday showed 54,804 vehicles entering Sturgis – an 8-percent decrease from 2019.
Sunday, however, showed a small increase; 56,149 vehicles entering Sturgis – a 1.1-percent increase from Sunday of last year.
Overall, the 3-day total is 160,788 – a 3.8-percent decrease over last year’s 3-day total of 167,222 for the opening weekend.
The D.O.T. will continue with its daily counts through the rally.
