Edward Dean Baier

Edward Dean Baier, 90, of Sturgis, SD, died Thursday, May 30, 2024, at Fort Meade VA Medical Center in Ft. Meade SD.

He was born August 18, 1933, in Sturgis to Edward M. and Mary (Jorensen) Baier. Ed graduated from Rapid City Cathedral High school and served in the US Army as a Staff Sergeant. He was assigned to the Border Patrol between the East and West zone in Germany. He then entered law enforcement for the next 33 years until his retirement. This included the Seattle Police Department, Rapid City Police Department with rank of Lieutenant, and later a Federal Law Enforcement Agency. Ed had many outside interests including scuba diving, search and rescue for the Rapid City Police Department, metal detecting, gold panning, auctioneering, and was a published author of nearly 100 articles appearing in various magazines. After retirement, he worked part time as a volunteer at the VA Medical Center.

He is survived by a son: Brian Baier (Barb Meverden), Lead, SD; daughter: Karen (Keith) Whitford, Sturgis, SD; 3 grandsons: Joshua (Carlee) Whitford, Sturgis, SD, Jeff Baier, Cheyenne, WY, and Josh (Kayla) Meverden, Rapid City, SD; and 2 granddaughters: Kristin (Joel) Lankutis, Billings, MT, and Kelsey (Jeremy) Eckhart, Sturgis, SD; as well as several great grandchildren, nephews, and nieces.

Ed was preceded in death by his wife, Hilda (Sandy) Baier, his son, Gary Baier, and grandson, Greg Baier, father, Edward M. Baier, mother, Mary S. Baier, step-mother, Helen (Fitzgerald) Baier, and 2 sisters, Alberta VanBeckhoven, and Dolores Cooper.

Visitation will be 9-12 p.m. on Tuesday, June 4, 2024, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis, SD.

Committal services with military honors will be 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 4, 2024, at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD.
