Elizabeth N. Johnson (Thornton) stepped out of this life into the faithful presence of Jesus Christ her Savior on December 7, 2023 in Rapid City, South Dakota.
Elizabeth was born January of 1940 in the state of Oklahoma, into a loving home surrounded by her parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and siblings which consisted of three brothers and three sisters.
At the age of 17, Elizabeth was swept off her feet by a handsome young man named Anton Edward Johnson, and they were soon wed in Portland, Oregon. At the age of 23, she accepted the Lord as her Savior, and served him with all her heart, soul, mind and strength from that time forward until she went home to see Him face to face.
Over the years, Anton and Elizabeth enjoyed many trips and traveled to most of the states, and Canada; many fond memories were made between them and their four children. In their later years they traveled mostly in the south west, finally ending up in Alamogordo, New Mexico. They shared 53 wonderful years of marriage, until the Lord took Anton home in 2010. After that, Elizabeth moved to Wyoming for several years, then back to Rapid City, SD.
Elizabeth had a very sharp mind and memory, and was always a wealth of information if you had any questions about life, Christ, or the world around you – or even wanted to debate politics. She loved to crochet and knit things for herself and her family, loved to go for long car rides, and loved to tell others about Jesus. Her loving and compassionate heart helped her to easily make friends wherever she went.
Life was an adventure for her, but pales in comparison to what she is experiencing now – being in heaven where she is “walking, and leaping, and praising God!”
Elizabeth will be greatly missed by her four children: Anna (George) Haines, Anton Jr., Holly (Steve) Hendren, and Allison (Dan) Ver Burg; 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren (plus one on the way), and 1 great-great grandchild; sister, Linda, and many nieces, nephews, and other family members.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
