Engineers on site investigating two Blackhawk area sinkholes

BLACKHAWK, S.D. – Engineers have been on scene trying to determine what caused two large sinkholes to open up in a Blackhawk neighborhood Monday night.

The two sinkholes led to the evacuation of several homes.

Law enforcement were initially dispatched to the Hideaway Hills subdivision on East Daisy Street Monday after a report of a sinkhole was received. Upon arriving, officials reported one large sinkhole at the end of a driveway of a home. A second large sinkhole was spotted across the street in the backyard of a home.

Authorities used a drone this morning to fly in and investigate the sinkhole. Busted utility lines could be seen in the drone footage shared on Facebook.

Officials say those evacuated will have somewhere to stay as crews continue to assess the danger.

At this time, it is not known what caused the sinkholes but engineers are working today at the site.
