Ernest Edgar Landrum

Ernest Edgar Landrum

Ernest Edgar Landrum, known for his sharp wit and curiosity as expansive as the universe he so loved to explore, fell asleep in death on October 15, 2024, at the age of 80. Born on September 13, 1944, in the humble town of Taft, California, Ernie’s life was a testament to the power of humor, intelligence, and devotion. He passed away peacefully of natural causes in Rapid City, South Dakota, surrounded by his family in the Black Hills he had grown to love.

Ernest, or Ernie as he was affectionately called by those who knew his penchant for a good laugh, was a man of many talents and an intellect that could give Spock a run for his money. A graduate of Taft High School, he didn’t just stop at academia; he embraced the role of a lifelong learner and teacher. As a devoted minister of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Ernie spent over 60 years imparting wisdom and spiritual guidance to his congregation, always ready with an anecdote or a light-hearted jest to make the message stick.

He shared a deep commitment with his spouse, Candy, a partnership that was both a personal and professional triumph as they co-owned and operated a janitorial business for 53 years. Their collaboration was a daily demonstration of their commitment to each other and the family they nurtured together. Their children, Jacob (Courtney) Landrum, Anna (Travis) Daniels, and Karen Landrum, along with grandsons Liam, Michael, Silas, Anthony, Gabriel, and Jonah, were deeply valued by him and each held a unique and important place in his heart.

A full-time evangelizer for 21 years, Ernie was known for his ability to turn even the most mundane biblical passage into something that his student could use in their life. His passion for teaching was matched only by his love for classical piano, science fiction, and astronomy. He truly couldn’t wait for a future where he could learn all the secrets the universe had to offer.

Ernie’s analytical mind was balanced by a passionate soul, and wry wit. He believed that laughter was the best medicine, and he prescribed it with his trademark irreverent touch.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Aileen Landrum. While we mourn the loss of such a remarkable man, we also celebrate the incredible journey he shared with us. We look forward to the time we will see him again in the promised new world that he so fervently believed is just around the corner.

As we bid farewell to Ernie, we remember him not with somber hearts but with the joy and laughter he so freely gave. His was a life well-lived, full of passion and intelligence, and the stories he leaves behind will continue to inspire and entertain. As his wife Candy says “He was a hoot!”.

Ernie’s legacy is a constellation of memories that will shine brightly in the night sky, a reminder that even in the darkest of times, a little bit of light— and laughter— can go a long way.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM October 26, 2024 at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Rapid City with Richard Daniels officiating.
