FAITH, SD – From a carnival midway to plenty of arena action, there is a full slate of activities planned for the 114th Faith Stock Show and Rodeo.
Running August 7-11, 2024, Stock Show swings open the gates Wednesday, August 7th with a World Bucking Futurity, the high school saddle bronc competition “Bucking For Pedro” followed by the U.S. Open PRCA Xtreme Broncs Match begins at 7:00p.m. Long-time stock show secretary Gnene Fordyce says Faith is the place to be for those looking for the fun of a carnival midway and the action of a PRCA event.
“If you like to see up and coming broncs, be in Faith Tuesday morning,” said Fordyce. “We’ll be dummy bucking with a rigging and flank strap with two and three-year-old’s being bucked out. It will be some great watching.” She continued, “There are some young, stand-out broncs in our region. Stock contractors will be in the seats for this one, looking to add to their bucking strings.”
That evening, the U.S. Open PRCA Xtreme Bronc Match comes to the arena. As stand-alone bronc matches go, the one in Faith is a barn-burner and the final one where cowboys can earn points towards the PRCA Xtreme Broncs Finals. Arena action begins at 7p.m. They’ll be breaking in brand new bucking chutes that have been installed at the fairgrounds.
“Our bronc ride was where everything started. Now a days, a lot of places of stand-alone bronc rides in the PRCA but Faith’s was the first one,” shares Fordyce.
Team ropers from multiple states also head to Faith, S.D., for timed-event competitions set for Thursday, August 8th. Like most things with the “Biggest Party on the Prairie,” the roping events have expanded over the years.
Exhibits open to the public on Friday, August 9th. Rodeo queens will be competing for the title, the Northshore Golf Tournament gets underway, along with the Pen of Three Livestock Show. The midway is open and the popular Ranch Rodeo and Ranch Bronc Riding begins at 6:00p.m. Just ahead of that, Mutton Busting, Wild Pony Races and Pony Bareback Riding will fill the arena with kids competing for prizes.
“The Ranch Rodeo is when we have the Pony Bareback Riding which is extremely popular. We also have Wild Pony Races. It’s pretty good watching and the good always have a blast,” said Fordyce.
This year’s parade theme is “The Circus” with Parade Marshalls Gordie and Kathy Collins. It’s first showing will be Saturday, August 10th and the remainder of the day is filled with activities for the kids, from horses to bikes to airboat rides and the carnival. That evening the first round of SDRA, NRCA, MSRA Rodeo gets under way at 6:30p.m., that includes a Calf Scramble and the first round of Indian Relay Races.
“There are always good horse races at Faith. It’s one of our premier events that everybody looks forward to” shares Fordyce. “Indian Relay Races are incomparable for the excitement and tradition of the sport. You have to experience it to really understand just what an outstanding event it is.”
There’s so much action on the final day of the Faith Stock Show and Rodeo, it’s almost like they saved the best for last. There’s the Fireman’s Breakfast, Cowboy Worship, another parade, American Legion Auxiliary Bingo, the Indian Relay Races Finals and more rodeo action that includes the Old Original Wild Ride competition. Rodeo performances are popular during the Faith Stock Show & Rodeo and bring a lot of history to the event that is the longest, consecutive running rodeo in South Dakota.
