FEMA to reimburse Sturgis for new crossing on 7th Street

STURGIS, S.D. – The city of Sturgis has heard back from FEMA on the 7th street low water crossing.

Sturgis City Manager Daniel Ainslie says FEMA has approved their reimbursement request.

“So FEMA will be reimbursing the cost of the 7th street bridge replacement at 75-percent and the state will be paying 10-percent so that’s an 85-percent.”

Ainslie says that is based off the engineer’s estimate in 2020 when the paperwork was initially sent to FEMA.

“At that point, it was originally estimated at just over $700,00,”Ainslie said. “That comes out to $598,000 that will be received as a grant from FEMA and the state. We just received an updated anticipated cost which is $915,000 and so that leaves a city share of about $317,000.”

He says bid specks are currently underway and the project should be out for bid in about three weeks with construction possibly beginning later this summer.

The original 7th street bridge was washed out during flooding in 2019.
