Fire crews battle blaze near Hermosa

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Firefighters battled a wildfire approximately four miles west of Hermosa in Custer County Tuesday.

According to Great Plains Fire Information, The Battle Creek Fire was reported at 11:54 Tuesday morning.

The fire had burned approximately 9.4 acres and crews were able to stop the forward progress of the wind driven fire. Mop up operations were being conducted last evening.

Federal, state and local resources all responded to the blaze. The cause of the fire was under investigation.

The Pennington County Fire Services stated the fire danger in much of South Dakota’s grasslands is rated “extreme.” Open burning is prohibited in Pennington County. Officials stress to follow your local fire department instructions and be prepared to act if a wildfire develops in your area. Be aware of anything that could cause a spark or flame.

Firefighters in Yankton also had a busy day on Tuesday, including responding to a grass fire on the Nebraska side of the Missouri River that burned 400 acres. Officials say it happened in the area of a campground northwest of Crofton, Nebraska. Firefighters were called to help the Crofton Fire Department with the blaze around 5 p.m. Tuesday.
