Fire crews continue Travers Fire battle

BUFFALO, S.D. – Fire crews in Harding County continued battling the Travers Fire overnight, working to dig fire lines around the town of Buffalo in case of unexpected weather conditions pushing the fire towards town.

Harding County officials were keeping residents updated through the night on their social media channels as the Buffalo Town Board worked with property owners that border the northwest corner of town so they could do an additional fire line.

Kathy Glines, Harding County Emergency Manager, says these were safety precautions and that Buffalo was not in immediate danger.

Still, she says the swirling winds have tested firefighters.

She says today, crews are hoping to make some headway.

Glines says fire crews are being very cautious as there are still several places along the fire line that are hot and a good gust of wind could cause it to flare.

They are monitoring the weather closely and using this opportunity to really stabilize the fire lines.

The fire is estimated at just over 8,000 acres as of this afternoon.
