Fire crews make progress on Power Dam Road Fire

MURDO, S.D. – The Power Dam Road fire on Friday grew to 15,000 acres, but according to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, most of it has been contained around the eastern edge.

The fire was burning west of U.S. Highway 83, and a wind shift caused the smoke to move over that road due to a cold front.

A multi-agency incident management team has been working on the fire.

State resources, as well as those from Mellette County and the Rosebud Indian reservation through the Bureau of Indian Affairs, are also involved.

Single-engine tankers were heavily involved in containing the fire Friday, making water and fire retardant drops.

The members of the Draper and Murdo Volunteer Fire Departments would like to extend our most sincere gratitude to all the folks of Jones County and the surrounding areas for all of the “behind the scenes” work over the past couple days. From the abundant donations of food and drinks, all the folks hauling water, multiple tractors and discs, motor graders, and those who shuttled supplies around. The outpouring  generosity of all the folks in the community during these incidents makes things much easier for those on the line.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
