RAPID CITY, S.D. – Great Plains Dispatch says fire crews quickly knocked down a handful of fires Monday in extremely hot and dry conditions.
One of the largest was grass and timber fire near Mirror Lake near Spearfish in Lawrence County.
The Upper Mirror Fire was reported just after 4:00 p.m. and burned between 5-10 acres. Air support was brought in to drop water on the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The Moon Fire was sparked by a power pole just to the northwest of Rapid City. Fire crews were quickly able to contain it.
Another small fire was reported south of Sturgis on Vanocker Canyon Road. That fire was contained at one tenth of an acre. The cause of the fire was not listed.
Area fire crews are urging people to be careful with the next two days being extremely hot and dry.
