Fire heavily damages Sturgis home

STURGIS, S.D. – A home in Sturgis is heavily damaged after a Friday night fire.

Fire crews were sent to 2114 Hillside Drive shortly before midnight after receiving a report the home’s garage was on fire.

Flames were being fed by a stiff southerly wind, and by the time firefighters arrived, the fire had started moving to the home.

The winds were blowing embers from the home onto neighboring structures, and firefighters asked for some additional help to contain the fire.

Fire crews from Fort Meade and Whitewood were dispatched, and ladder 4 from Fort Meade arrived to attack the fire from above.

Thanks to diligent work from the firefighters on scene, they were able to keep the fire contained to the original structure.

Fire crews remained on the scene for several hours after dousing the flames, hitting hot spots and making sure any embers didn’t start other fires.

There were no injuries reported as witnesses on scene told KBHB the family made it out o.k.

There was no word yet on cause of the fire.
