Fire in Wyoming burns over 17,000 acres, not contained

WRIGHT, WYOMING – As the Deer Creek fire burns in Johnson, Sheridan and Campbell Counties, another fire in Campbell County has destroyed 17,258 acres, burning into Weston County.

In the early morning hours of August 2, 2024, the Campbell County Fire Department responded to a grass fire that was reported off of Rochelle Hills Road, southeast of Wright, Wyoming.

Strong winds and dry vegetation in the area caused the fire to spread rapidly. On the evening of August 4, the fire was estimated to have spread to approximately 17,258 acres.

There have been no reported injuries, deaths or structures lost to the Wildcat Creek fire.

A Type III Incident Commander has assumed command of the fire. Resources from Campbell County, Weston County, Converse County, Bureau of Land Management, Wyoming State Forestry, U.S. Forestry and contractors are on scene.

Air tankers, helicopters and heavy equipment have been utilized to try and contain the fire. Indirect tactics are being used to create areas of black large enough to prevent the fire from crossing over and continuing to spread.

Fire crews continue to work diligently and will be on the scene for multiple days. Containment is currently estimated to be 30%.

The region is currently experiencing hot and dry weather, creating a high risk of wildfire. Stage 1 Fire Restrictions are in place on private and public lands.

The exact cause of the fire is being investigated.
