HURON, S.D. – Authorities say a firefighter from the Cavour department was killed while fighting a fire outside Huron Monday afternoon.
The fire destroyed the Hurd Alignment and Service building on Old Highway 14 west of Huron.
It’s not known how the firefighter died, although Huron Fire Department Chief Ron Hines confirmed the death.
Fire stations across the state were offering condolences to the Cavour Fire Department on social media Monday.
The fire was tough for firefighters due to unknown conditions and temperatures near 100-degrees. Thick black smoke from the fire could be seen for miles.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
