RAPID CITY, S.D. – Firefighters continued their work Wednesday to contain the First Thunder Fire, which was first reported in the early evening on Monday, September 2, 2024.
As of Wednesday evening, the fire is 41% contained with a size of 157 acres. 200 personnel are working to contain the blaze.
Multiple air resources have aided ground crews with suppression efforts. The fire’s overnight growth was limited, giving crews the opportunity to establish containment lines.
There are still no evacuations in effect. The Pennington County Sheriff’s Department continued to provide pre-evacuation information to residents impacted by the fire.
A three-day trend is predicted to bring favorable weather to the Black Hills. Temperatures into the 70s and higher relative humidities are expected.
The area has had 25 mile-per-hour winds with passing storms producing gusts up to 40 miles per hour. Scattered showers are aiding in fire suppression.
Taylor Ranch, Norseman and Victoria Lake remain closed. Buzzard’s Roost Trailhead and Falling Rock have been reopened.
