PIERRE, S.D. — “P!nk” the singer is coming to Sioux Falls–and pink the color may be coming to a sporting goods store near you.
Today (Monday), the Senate unanimously passed HB1228 32 to 0 to allow fluorescent pink for outer garments when hunting big game.
Though many upland bird hunters wear blaze orange, state law does not require it.
Senators discussed this fact and learned that big game cannot see fluorescent pink, which is not found in nature.
They also had some fun with what the “right” shade of pink would be. Republican Sen. Lee Schoenbeck from Watertown, an avid hunter, said there were “240 shades of pink.”
There were also jokes about the sponsor, Republican Sen. Arch Beal’s “hot pink” tie.
There was a more serious question from Sen. Michael Rohl from Aberdeen.
“Color blind people with tritanopia can’t see yellow or pink, and one in 12 men are color-blind,” Rohl said. “Has that been discussed at all?”
Beal said, “Absolutely not.” he said studies indicate that pink is safer than other colors.
The next stop for the pink bill is Gov. Kristi Noem, who is also an avid hunter.
