Former Sturgis SDNG soldier honored with Quilt of Valor

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Army Staff Sgt. (RET) Andy Davis of Rapid City was honored with a Quilt of Valor for his over 29 years of South Dakota National Guard (SDNG) service at Joint Force Headquarters on Camp Rapid, on August 5.

Jan Clites presented Davis with his quilt on behalf of Quilts of Valor – made by Faith and Freedom of Calvert County, Maryland.

The Quilts of Valor foundation was started in 2003 and has presented over 290,000 quilts to honor and comfort those veterans and service members that from World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Latin America, Desert Storm, Iraq and Afghanistan where upon return from service, some were met with criticism.

Davis enlisted in the SDNG in 1975 where he spent most of his service in the 842nd Engineer Company in Sturgis.

He deployed in support of Operation Enduring/ Iraqi Freedom 2003-2004 with time in Kuwait and Iraq in under less than favorable conditions.

Davis retired from the SDNG in 2005.

The quilt serves as a tangible reminder of appreciation and gratitude for their service.
