Former Summerset mayor pleads guilty to having hidden camera in bathroom

STURGIS, S.D. – A Piedmont man has pleaded guilty to using a device to photograph or visually record a person without consent.

George Mandas, 56, entered his plea in Meade County Court last week.

The charge against him arose in the fall of 2021 when a woman who was dog-sitting at his residence noticed a camera hidden in the home’s master bathroom.

A plea deal reached between Mandas and the State in December resulted in the State dropping an eavesdropping charge in exchange for his guilty plea.

KNBN-TV reports in his plea affidavit, Mandas states he “deeply regrets” the incident and was participating in counseling on a weekly basis.

Mandas served as Mayor of Summerset from May 2012 to April of 2019. The city of Summerset has also accepted his resignation as a consultant to the city.
