STURGIS, S.D. – The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating a four vehicle accident that happened on I-90 two miles west of Piedmont Tuesday morning.
The patrol says the driver of a Ford Ranger pickup noticed smoke coming out of the front of the engine and pulled the vehicle over onto the right shoulder. The two occupants of the pickup were able to escape the vehicle before it became engulfed in flames.
Three vehicles that happened to come up on the incident slowed down and were in the passing lane when a truck pulling a trailer was unable to stop in time and rear-ended a 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix. The Grand Prix then rear-ended a 2008 Toyota Camry.
The incident disabled all three vehicles as well as the truck, which was pulling a trailer with powdered cement.
The patrol says a 16-year-old male in the Grand Prix received minor injuries and was transported by family members to the Sturgis hospital. No other injuries were reported.
Tony Mangan, spokesman with the South Dakota Highway Patrol, says as of now, no charges are pending.
Westbound traffic was down to one lane for about an hour as crews cleared the accident scene.
