Friday’s Rally Statistics Report from Highway Patrol indicates one new fatality

STURGIS, S.D. – The South Dakota Highway Patrol has reported a new fatal crash in their daily Rally Statistics Report.

The fatal crash happened Thursday evening on South Dakota Highway 87, about eight miles northeast of Custer.

The patrol says a 2013 Harley Davidson motorcycle was traveling southbound when the vehicle cross the center line and collided with a northbound 2011 Chevrolet Impala. The 58-year-old male driver of the motorcycle was pronounced dead at the scene. The two occupants of passenger car were not injured.

The fatal crash makes 5 fatalities since the rally officially started on Friday.

As for injury crashes, the patrol reported six in the latest report, with one resulting in serious, life-threatening injuries. The crash happened on U.S. Highway 16A, a mile south of Keystone. The 57-year-old male driver of a motorcycle received life threatening injuries when he collided with another motorcycle trying to negotiate a curve. A passenger on the bike suffered serious, non-life-threatening injuries. Four of the other crashes resulted in serious injuries.

The total number of injury crashes to date total 48 – one ahead of last year. Non-injury crashes total 35.

D.U.I. arrests total 99, felony drug arrests total 96 and misdemeanor drug arrests total 128.

Meanwhile, Sturgis Police say open container violations have leveled off, but traffic arrests are ahead of last year.

Last night, Sturgis Police Geody VanDewater says law enforcement stopped a large group of Hells Angels after receiving a report that they were driving down Main Street, failing to stop at all the stop signs and driving in a carless manner.

He says on their way back from the Vets Club, they were observed violating traffic laws and a traffic stop was conducted on the group.  The violators were issued citations and allowed to continue on their way.
