STURGIS, S.D. – The South Dakota Highway Patrol reported no fatalities in their latest Rally Report, but did report eight injury crashes with five of those resulting in serious, but non-life threatening injuries.
The number of injury accidents on the year total 51 – up ten from this date last year. Non-injury accidents total 37 – up three over last year.
The number of D-U-I arrests has risen to 94 with the number of felony drug arrests totaling 133. D-U-I arrests are down over last year, but drug arrests are up. Misdemeanor drug arrests, which are also up over the year, total 188 in today’s report.
The number of fatal crashes remained at three.
Locally, Sturgis Police reported 5 D-U-I’s yesterday along with 3 misdemeanor drug arrests. There were no felony drug arrests in the latest reporting period.
Officer also doled out 13 illegal parking citations and cited four people for speeding.
Sturgis Police also handled 3 fight calls, 4 non-injury crashes and one injury accident.
So far, Sturgis Police have made 196 traffic-related arrests and 135 non-traffic arrests. Both numbers are up last year.
For the Meade County Sheriff’s Office, there were no D-U-I arrests reported yesterday. However, Sheriff Pat West says they had nine felony drug arrests. That included methamphetamine, heroin and other substances being taken off the street.
He was anticipating releasing more information on yesterday’s drug arrests at a later time.

Injury Crashes:
At 6:51am, Thursday, US Highway 85, mile marker 12: A 2018 BMW K1600 was southbound and struck a deer in the roadway. The driver was wearing helmet and received serious non-life-threatening injuries.
At 8:30am, Thursday, US Highway 85, mile marker 1: A 2016 Victory motorcycle and 2021 Harley Davidson motorcycle were traveling southbound in a group. The group slowed down and the Victory rear ended the Harley Davidson. The driver of the Victory was not wearing a helmet and received serious non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Harley Davidson was wearing a helmet and was not injured.
At 10:33am, Thursday, South Dakota Highway 87, mile marker 50: A 2013 Harley Davidson was traveling southbound and struck an antelope. The driver and passenger were thrown from the motorcycle. The driver was not wearing a helmet and received minor injuries. The passenger was wearing a helmet and received minor injuries.
At 1:26pm, Thursday, Old Hill City Road: A 2017 Indian motorcycle was traveling eastbound, failed to negotiate a curve, and left the roadway. The driver was not wearing a helmet and received minor injuries. The passenger was wearing a helmet and received serious non-life-threatening injuries.
At 5:01pm, Thursday, Wildlife Loop Road, mile marker 4: a 2013 Harley Davidson motorcycle was traveling westbound, failed to negotiate a curve, and left the roadway. The driver and passenger were wearing helmets. The driver received minor injuries and the passenger received serious non-life-threatening injuries.
At 5:19pm, Thursday, US Highway 14A, mile marker 47: a 2003 Yamaha motorcycle was traveling westbound and lost control. The driver became separated from the motorcycle. The driver was wearing a helmet and received minor injuries.
At 5:22pm, Thursday, US Highway 16, mile marker 57: a 2009 Suzuki motorcycle was traveling westbound. A 2020 Kia Sorento was attempting to cross westbound lanes of travel to turn eastbound on US Highway 16. The Suzuki struck the rear taillight of the Kia. The driver of the Suzuki was separated from the motorcycle. The driver of the Suzuki was wearing a helmet and received serious non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Kia was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured.
At 6:43pm, Thursday, Alkali Road near its intersection with 132nd Ave: a 2022 Toyota Sienna was traveling eastbound, left the roadway, struck a sign, and entered the south ditch. The driver was wearing a seatbelt and received minor injuries.
