Fundraising for controversial shooting range in Meade County off to slow start

RAPID CITY, S.D. – It appears dirt work could soon be commencing at a controversial shooting range north of Rapid City on Elk Vale Road, although fundraising for the multi-million dollar project is off to a slow start.

State records indicate Dakota Redi Mix reportedly will start to move dirt and grade the complex location later this year. They were offered the contract with a bid of $5.8 million.

The proposed shooting range is under opposition by many living in the area.

Fundraising for the shooting range is also underway. John Kanta with the Game, Fish and Parks told the Commission last week that $740,000 had been raised with a goal of $5 million.

The department meanwhile is seeking proposals for someone to serve as an independent fundraiser for the project. Yesterday was the deadline for those offers.

A minority of lawmakers two years ago kept the project from receiving state funding, despite support from Governor Kristi Noem, because the House couldn’t reach the necessary two-thirds majority. The state Department of Game, Fish and Parks proceeded with it anyway.

Kanta told the commission he is still hoping for a grand opening in the fall of 2025.
