Gate left open, cows out, results in multiple crashes

BROOKINGS, S.D.–Six vehicles were damaged after colliding with cows that wandered onto Interstate 29 in Brookings County.

The sheriff’s department says the initial call came in a little before 1:30 Saturday morning of a vehicle that struck a cow a few miles north of the Bruce-White exit.

When first responders got there, they discovered approximately 90 cows had wandered onto the interstate and into the ditch through an open gate.

As a Brookings County deputy was taking a report of the first accident, five more vehicles, including a city of Brookings fire truck struck additional cows.

The combined damage to the vehicles is estimated at more than $26,000.

The total loss of the cattle is estimated at $11,500.
