SIOUX FALLS, SD – Day one of the South Dakota State Girls Basketball Tournaments has wrapped up.

At the Class A Tournament, In a game that went down to the wire, St Thomas More held on to beat Lakota Tech 37-35, courtesy of a last second shot by Reese Ross.

Ross scored 20 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Cavaliers into the semifinal game Friday night.

Up next for St Thomas More is top seeded Wagner, who used a late surge to get past Red Cloud 68-62.

At the Class B Tournament, the eighth-seeded Viborg-Hurley Cougars brought in a group of eighth grade boys from their school district to help them prepare for the taller Aberdeen Roncalli Cavaliers, the top-seed in the Class B Girl’s Basketball Tournament, and it paid off.

The Cougars pulled-off the eight seed over one seed to start the State Tournament in Watertown Thursday afternoon. After trailing 28-27 at halftime, the Cougars went on an 8-0 run to build a lead late in the third quarter, a lead they would never give up en route to a 69-58 win.

The Faith Longhorns are also headed to the semifinals with a 54-34 win over Wall. Faith used a 20-9 run in the second quarter to pull away from the Eagles.  Kaycee Groves and Cassidy Schuelke each had 15 points to lead the Longhorns.

Up next for Faith is DeSmet, who defeated Aberdeen Christian 52-44.

At the Class AA Tournament, Rapid City Stevens used a late game spurt to get past Rapid City Central 40-34.

Macey Wathen hit 5 three-pointers and scored 17 points to lead the Raiders. Up next for Stevens is Sioux Falls Jefferson, who defeated Sioux Falls Washington 47-43.
