Grain Elevator Fire closes highway south of Philip

PHILIP, S.D. — Fire departments from across western South Dakota were battling a fire at a grain elevator in Philip today.

Photos from the scene showed the elevator completely engulfed in flames.

Philip firefighters responded to the initial call early Wednesday morning and quickly established a perimeter around the elevator out of an abundance of caution. Additional resources were brought in aid in the firefighting effort.

The elevator is located at the intersection of Cherry Street and Highway 73.

The fire ended up closing Highway 73 to traffic in the immediate area.

Officials say the closure was for the safety of the traveling public and to allow firefighters to access the area.

There had been no reports of injuries as of this afternoon and no word on the fire’s cause.
