Grand Gateway owner found guilty on two of three simple assault counts

RAPID CITY, S.D. – A Pennington County jury found 76-year-old Connie Uhre, one of the owners of the Grand Gateway Hotel, guilty on two of three counts of simple assault Friday evening.

The Pennington County State’s Attorney’s Office reports that the trial took place over two days and concluded with a unanimous verdict by the jury, “affirming that the evidence presented substantiated two of the three charges beyond a reasonable doubt.”

The charges stemmed from when Uhre was arrested at the Grand Gateway Hotel on May 27, 2022, after she sprayed three individuals with Pledge cleaning solution. The three victims were with approximately 20 others protesting near the hotel in response to an offensive comment regarding Native Americans that was posted by Uhre on Facebook.

A sentencing date has not been set yet and that Uhre faces up to one year in jail and a $2,000 fine for each of the two counts.
