STURGIS, S.D. – Sturgis fire crews were among the agencies who responded to a grass fire at 13426 207th Street east of Sturgis Thursday morning.
The Meade County Sheriff’s Office says a landowner was attempting to burn trash in a barrel, when sparks and ash from the barrel ignited some dry grass approximately 20 feet away.
Authorities say the fire quickly took off and threatened to continue burning south towards other property.
Sturgis joined multiple area fire crews with a quick response to keep the fire from expanding.
The fire burned around an acre before crews were able to contain it.
Fire officials remind Meade County residents there is a burn ban still in place and extreme fire danger is in effect.
The Meade County Sheriff’s Office says the landowner was issued a citation for violating the burn ban.
