Guy M. Virkula, 90, Spearfish, SD formerly of Lead, passed away Monday, November 25, 2024 at Fort Meade Veterans Administration Healthcare Center. A memorial visitation for Guy will be held 2:00 – 4:00 PM, Sunday, December 1, 2024 at Black Hills Funeral Home in Sturgis. Private family inurnment will be at Black Hills National Cemetery. Friends may gather at the Deadwood VFW at 1:30 PM, Monday, December 2 for a Celebration of life.
Guy Malcolm Virkula was born February 13, 1934 at Lead to Edwin and Florence (Tripp) Virkula. Guy was raised in the Lead area, graduating from Lead High School in 1952. Following high school he joined the United States Navy, proudly serving from 1953 to 1957. After receiving his honorable discharge, he returned to Lead and attended Black Hills Teachers College for a year. He married Kay Buckmaster in Deadwood on October 19, 1958. Guy was then hired by the Forest Service, where he worked in timber management for over 30 years. After retiring from the forest service, he continued to work with timber management in the private sector for many years.
When he wasn’t working, Guy enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Guy is survived by his wife, Kay, Spearfish; children, Kimberly (Rodney) Davis, Lead, Garth (Theresa) Virkula, Rapid City; grandchildren, Cable (Sara) Davis, Casey (Kelsie) Davis, Brian (Sarah) Davis, Ashley (Andrew) Telkamp, Whitney (Reid) Brost; six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Florence Virkula and two sisters, Ethel and Camilla.
