Hamlin, SF Washington, Viborg-Hurley win championships as girls basketball season wraps up

UNDATED – The 2023 South Dakota girls state basketball tournaments concluded on Saturday from Sioux Falls, Watertown, and Huron. Washington (AA), Hamlin (A), and Viborg-Hurley (B) claimed state titles.

Viborg-Hurley defeated Wall to win their title.

The two teams were tied at 17 after the first quarter, but the Cougars would go on a 17-10 run in the second and take a 34-27 lead into halftime. Viborg-Hurley would then use an 18-2 run in the second half to pull away in the fourth quarter and win 71-61.

Wall was led by Paige Kjerstad’s 21 points. Nora Dinger added 13 for the Lady Eagles, who bring home second place from the tournament.

Class AA

Championship: Sioux Falls Washington defeated Pierre 54-36

3rd/4th: Sioux Falls Jefferson defeated Harrisburg 55-34

5th/6th: O’Gorman defeated Mitchell 70-33

7th/8th: Rapid City Stevens defeated Watertown 53-51

Class A

Champoinship: Hamlin defeated Wagner 58-55

3rd/4th: Sisseton defeated Red Cloud 55-47

5th/6th: Sioux Falls Christian defeated Flandreau 46-43

7th/8th: Rapid City Christian defeated Lakota Tech 66-52

Class B

Champoinship: Viborg-Hurley defeated Wall 71-61

3rd/4th: Wolsey-Wessington defeated Ethan 60-55

5th/6th: Jones County defeated Castlewood 48-43

7th/8th: Howard defeated Sully Buttes 54-44
