Health Department reports 95 new cases, one new death in Friday COVID-19 report

PIERRE, S.D. – South Dakota Health officials reported some connectivity issues on lab tests Thursday, resulting in a lower number of new COVID-19 cases being reported.

Today, those issues were resolved, and as expected, the state recorded an uptick in new positive tests with 95.

The state processed 1,937 tests Friday, one of the largest single-day testing totals so far. Just under five percent of tests came back positive. Test positivity in South Dakota has been averaging between 5%-8% in recent weeks.

Pennington County reported 25 of today’s new cases, sending their cumulative total over 700 to 704. Of those, 149 are active – up eight from yesterday.

Butte County, who reported their first COVID-19 related death this week, reported one new case. Oglala Lakota had 4 new cases.

There were no new cases reported in Meade or Lawrence Counties. Meade has 8 active, Lawrence has 2.

The statewide active caseload is up 23 today to 865. There are 61 people hospitalized – the same as yesterday.

There was also a new death reported today.  The new death came in Beadle County, which now has nine total deaths. The new death was a man in the 50-59 age range.

The state’s death toll is now 116.
