Health officials report 254 new COVID-19 cases Wednesday along with two new deaths

STURGIS, S.D. – The state continues to see a record number of active COVID-19 cases as 254 new positive tests for the virus today sent the active caseload up 125 to 2,875.

Of the 254 new cases today, there were 72 reported around the Black Hills area.

Pennington County saw the most as 27 new cases of COVID-19 were reported. The cumulative total in Pennington rises to 1,475 and there are 432 active cases. The active number of cases are up 4 over yesterday.

Meade County reported 12 new cases Wednesday, sending the total number of cases to 317 with 145 remaining active. The active number of cases in Meade is down 3 today.

Lawrence County had 4 new cases to report, sending the cumulative total there to 233 with 116 active cases. Active cases in Lawrence are down 4 today.

Custer County also saw a double-digit increase today as 13 new COVID-19 cases were reported. Custer County has a total of 130 with 64 remaining active. Active cases in Custer County are up 11 today.

Elsewhere around the Black Hills area, Oglala Lakota County had nine new cases, Fall River County added 6 and Butte County had an additional 2 new cases.

Once again, despite the increase in new cases, the state’s hospitalization rate remains stable. The total number of hospitalizations is down one today to 77.

Two new deaths were reported, however. The new deaths were one man and one woman listed in the 60-69 and 80+ age ranges. The new deaths were reported in Union County and Gregory County.

A total of 1,330 new persons tested were reported on Wednesday.
