Health officials report 259 new COVID-19 cases and five new deaths

STURGIS, S.D. – Active cases dropped today as state health officials reported 259 new cases of COVID-19.

The state’s active number of cases dropped 144 to 3,684 and the number of people hospitalized increased by 2 to 211.

The state also recorded 5 new COVID-19 related deaths, sending the total number of deaths since the pandemic began to 223. Of the five new deaths, four were men and one was a woman with three listed in the 80+ age range and two in the 70-79 age range. Two of the deaths were out of Codington County, one was out of Clay County, one was out of Fall River County and one was out of Lawrence County. Lawrence County now has 5 COVID-19 related deaths.

As for new cases around the Black Hills area, Pennington County saw the most new cases with 37; sending the cumulative total to 2,365. The number of active cases, however, dropped 10 today to 416.

Both Meade and Lawrence counties added 6 new cases each today. The Meade County total is 548 with 106 active cases. The Lawrence County total is 418 with 103 active cases. Both counties saw a decrease in active cases today with Meade County down 16 and Lawrence County down 6.

Other new cases around the Black Hills area today include 3 in Oglala Lakota and 2 in Butte counties.

Across all of West River, there were 78 new cases.

There were 802 new persons tested reported on Monday.
