STURGIS, S.D. – It was another deadly COVID-19 report from state health officials Friday as a new record daily high of 28 people have reportedly died. The new deaths were 17 women and 11 men in the age ranges of 50-59; 60-69; 70-79 and 80-plus.
The new high number breaks Thursday’s record of 22 deaths in one day. So far, November has realized 85 deaths.
Also on the increase again today were the number of people hospitalized due to the virus, which hit 493 Friday – up 18 from Thursday.
New cases today totaled 1,489 and active cases were back up over 14,000 as 14,426 cases remain active across the state.
Across West River counties, there were 347 new cases reported, with Pennington and Oglala Lakota Counties reporting the most. Pennington added 98 new cases to send the total there to 5,475. Of those, 1,446 remain active.
Oglala Lakota County added 55 new cases Friday for a total of 1,208 and 526 active cases.
Lawrence County continues to see high numbers this week as an additional 51 new cases were reported. In Lawrence County, the total reached 1,253 and the active number of cases is up 27 to 435.
Meade County added 22 new cases for a total of 1,149. Of those, 258 remain active in Meade.
Other new cases across West River include 30 in Dewey, 13 in Butte, 12 each in Lyman and Todd, 11 in Gregory, 7 in Stanley, 6 in Custer, 5 in Ziebach, 4 in Corson, 3 each in Fall River, Perkins and Mellette, 2 in Jackson and one each in Jones, Haakon and Bennett counties.
