Herbert “Herb” R. Allshouse

Herb Allshouse passed away suddenly surrounded by his family on the morning of Friday, July 19, 2024, at the age of 74. Herb was born January 10, 1950, in Minot, North Dakota to Mearl and Clytia (Hamilton) Allshouse. He spent his early life in Berthold, ND, Sauk Center, MN and Burnsville, MN. Herb graduated from Burnsville High School in 1968 and joined the Navy serving in Vietnam. After being honorably discharged from the Navy, Herb attended the University of Wisconsin, Madison and Hennepin Technical College. He worked for many years as a Welding Engineer/Manager with FMC/United Defense/BAE, RTI and Bermo, Inc. He also was a welding instructor for two years at Anoka Technical College. He married Carolyn Markwell in 1973 and raised four boys in Stillwater, MN. In the early 2000s, Herb and Carolyn moved to a small hobby farm just down the road where over several years they spent time restoring the property. Recently Herb moved to South Dakota, where he married Betty Smart in February of 2021. Finally, Herb and Betty moved to Rapid City in 2022 to be closer to Betty’s family, as her health declined, and was able to become close with her daughter Karen.

He loved spending time with family, restoring his old farm where they had chickens, a pair of horses, uncovered a grove of apple trees, started a grape vineyard and worked with Alice and Oliver (his beloved tractors). You could always find Herb putzing around in the garage and fixing or making things with his welding skills. He was very active and enjoyed being outside with his dog, Lou and going to one of his favorite places, the north shore, where he recently enjoyed rockhounding.

Herb was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Karen and Jody; wife, Betty; and sons, Aaron and Jack. He is survived by his son, Ryan (Michelle) and grandson’s, Tyler and Dylan; his son, Shawn; daughter-in-law, Stephanie Schwartz; stepdaughter, Karen (Brian) Louder; step-granddaughter, Chelsea Louder; brothers, Jim (Diane) and William (Sandy); former spouse, Carolyn; and several nieces and nephews. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Graveside services will be held at 9 am, Friday, July 26, 2024, at Black Hills National Cemetery, 20901 Pleasant Valley Dr, Sturgis, SD 57785.

A celebration of life will be held in Minnesota, in the twin cities area, at a future date.
