Highway Patrol identifies victims of two recent motorcycle crashes

PIERRE, S.D. – The South Dakota Highway Patrol has identified two people who died in two separate motorcycle crashes last week.

An Oxford, MI., man has been identified as the person who died in the hospital Thursday night (8.3.23) after a one-motorcycle crash Monday (7.31.23),14 miles southeast of Custer.

Preliminary crash information indicates a 2006 Harley Davidson FLSTCI was traveling eastbound on Wildlife Loop Road.  The motorcycle and its driver failed to negotiate a right-hand turn.  The driver became separated from the bike.  Both the driver and motorcycle came to rest on the north side of the road.

The driver, Anthony Verpooten, age 65, was taken by Life Flight helicopter to Monument Health Rapid City with life threatening injuries where he passed away from his injuries Thursday night.

The driver was not wearing a helmet.

South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

Meanwhile, A Sisseton, S.D. man has been identified as the person who died Friday in a single motorcycle crash 23 miles north-west of Midland, S.D.

Preliminary crash information indicates a 2005 Harley Davidson FLHRCI was traveling west on SD 34 near mile marker 163.  The driver lost control of the motorcycle, entered the south ditch, and became separated from the motorcycle.

The driver, Jerry Schaunaman, age 64, was taken by ambulance to the Pierre Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

The driver was not wearing a helmet.
