STURGIS, S.D. – The South Dakota Highway Patrol released their final Rally Report for the 80th annual event Sunday.
The patrol reported 5 fatalities — although that number could change in the coming days due to serious crashes that have occurred over the past week.
The number of injury crashes this year were up over last year with 56. That is four more than in 2019. Non-injury crashes were up nine over the year to 50.
D.U.I. arrests were down over last year as the patrol reported 145 compared to 171 last year. Misdemeanor drug arrests, however, were up over last year as the patrol reported 241 compared to 213 last year. Felony drug arrests were slightly lower than last year at 126, compared to 131 in 2019.
The patrol handed a total of 1,334 citations this year — that is right in line with last year’s 1,336.
As per the patrol, there was only one injury accident in the Saturday reporting period.
The patrol says at 7:23 p.m., Saturday, on Interstate 90, mile marker 10, Spearfish: A 1999 Harley Davidson Electra Glide was westbound on Interstate 90 when the vehicle left the roadway to the north. The driver was thrown from the motorcycle. The 66-year-old male driver was not wearing a helmet and sustained serious non-life threatening injuries. No charges are pending.
