Highway Patrol, Sturgis Police issue latest Rally Stats

STURGIS, S.D. – The South Dakota Highway Patrol has released its latest Rally Tally, which covers incidents through Day 4, Monday.

The number of rally-related fatalities remained the same at 2, and the patrol reported four injury crashes over the past 24 hours. Three of the accidents resulted in serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

The year-to-date total for injury crashes is 26 – up four from last year on this date. Non-injury crashes total 21 on the year.

Felony drug arrests total 35 on the year, up four from last year; and misdemeanor drug arrests total 81, up 22 from last year.

D-U-I arrests total 52 – down 9 from last year.

Locally, Sturgis Police report 8 D-U-I arrests during the latest reporting period, sending the year-to-date total to 34 – up 2 over last year.

There were 15 misdemeanor drug arrests in the latest reporting period and 11 felony drug arrests. Totals for the year are 50 and 21 respectively. Both numbers are up over last year.

Sturgis Police added 9 new illegal parking citations Monday, sending the year-to-date total 62. That is still well behind last year’s 105 reported on this date.

Sturgis Police report 85 non-traffic arrests on the year so far and 128 traffic-related arrests.

The Meade County Sheriff’s Office reported 5 D-U-I arrests with one being a felony, 2 felony arrests, 5 injury crashes and 3 non-injury crashes. They responded to 119 calls for service during the latest reporting period.

Injury Crashes:

At 8:35am, Monday, US Highway 14A, mile marker 35: A 2012 Harley Davidson motorcycle was traveling westbound on a wet roadway. The driver lost control, tipped, and slid into the north ditch. The driver was not wearing a helmet and received serious non-life-threatening injuries.

At 10:44am, Monday, US Highway 16, mile marker 56: A 2018 Harley Davidson motorcycle was traveling westbound, hit a patch of debris, lost control, and hit the guard rail. The driver was wearing a helmet and received serious non-life-threatening injuries.

At 3:53pm, Monday, Interstate 90, mile marker 53: A 2017 Harley Davidson motorcycle was traveling westbound, lost control, and entered the north ditch. The driver was wearing a helmet and received serious non-life-threatening injuries.

At 11:34pm, Monday, Fort Meade Way and 270th Street: A 1993 Chevy Astro Van was traveling southbound, entered the ditch, and struck a tree. The driver was wearing a seatbelt and received minor injuries.
