Historical Society seeking Governor’s Awards for History nominations

PIERRE, S.D. — The South Dakota State Historical Society is now accepting nominations for the Governor’s Awards for History.

Nominations may be made in three categories: individual (professional and non-professional), history organizations, and the history teacher of the year. The Society is also seeking nominations for the prestigious Robinson Lifetime Achievement Award given to a person who has a lifetime of dedicated and distinguished service to the preservation of the history of South Dakota. The Governor’s Awards for History are designed for individuals and organizations who exhibit meritorious service.

Additionally, the Society is seeking candidates for the upcoming trustee elections. Candidates must be a member of the Society. This year, the professional positions up for election are the archivist, the architectural historian, and the archeologist. There is also one at-large seat available to any member.

Nomination forms for either the awards or the trustee elections can be found on the State Historical Society’s website. They can also be obtained by contacting Kevin Larsen, Awards Coordinator, at [email protected] or by calling 605-773-6000. Nomination forms are due to the society by Feb. 28.

The award winners will be announced during the society’s annual history conference held this year in Deadwood, S.D., May 8 and 9, 2025.
