Home Run Barrage Lifts Scooper Softball Team To Win

RAPID CITY, SD – Avreigh Long drove in four runs on three hits, including a three run homer in the second inning, leading the Sturgis Scoopers to a 12-5 win over the Pierre Lady Governors on Tuesday at Parkview softball complex.

The Scoopers led 5-2 after two-and-a-half innings behind the dominant pitching of Abigail Tweedy.  The Scooper bats came to life in the bottom of the third as Kierra Killinger blasted a solo home run to deep center field to lead off the inning.  Tweedy stepped to the plate with one out and one on base and cracked a two-run dinger of her own, giving Sturgis an 11-2 lead headed into the fourth inning.

The Lady Govs tried to scrap their way back into the game, plating two runs in the fourth inning and one more in the seventh but it wasn’t enough, as the Scoops cruised to a 12-5 victory.

Tweedy got the win for Sturgis, who improved to 3-7 on the season. Tweedy gave up only six hits, walked eight and struck out 10 on 144 pitches. The Scoopers had 12 hits, with Tweedy, Long, and Carsyn and Avery Anderson collecting two hits each.

Pierre (2-4) was led by Breanna Lowery, who went 2-for-4 at the dish, with three RBIs. Erin Leiferman took the pitching loss for the Lady Governors.

The Scoopers are in action next on Friday as they host Sioux Falls Washington at 2pm, weather permitting.
