Hospitalizations continue to rise as 445 new COVID-19 cases reported Wednesday

STURGIS, S.D. – Active cases of COVID-19 within the state are back up over 3,000 today as 445 new cases of the virus were reported by the Department of Health.

It’s the first time the daily new case load has topped 400 since August 29.

The state’s active number of cases shot up 291 Wednesday to a total of 3,108.

Also up today are the number of people hospitalized due to COVID-19. Total number of hospitalizations increased 14 to 192. State health officials report 8-percent of the state’s hospital beds consist of COVID-19 patients.

New cases around the Black Hills area totaled 99 with Pennington County reporting the most with 50 new positive COVID-19 tests.  Pennington County saw their total reach 2,091 and active cases are up 29 to 328.

In Lawrence County, 20 new cases were reported, sending the cumulative total to 362. There are 86 active cases in Lawrence, up 18 from Tuesday.

Meade County recorded 12 new cases Wednesday, sending the cumulative total to 487 with 105 of them remaining active. Active cases are up 8 in Meade.

Other new case numbers Wednesday include 7 in Oglala Lakota, 5 in Butte, 4 in Custer and one in Fall River counties.

A total of 1,786 new test results were reported Wednesday.

There were no new deaths reported today.
