Howard Wood Relay’s – Aiden Hedderman wins hurdles

SIOUX FALLS — Aidan Hedderman of the Sturgis Scooper track and field team continued his dominance in the hurdles at the Howard Wood Dakota Relay’s by capturing the 110-meters Saturday.

The Sturgis High School senior ran a blistering :14.27 seconds, earning his second straight 110-meter hurdles titles at the 99th annual Howard Wood Dakota Relays.

Hedderman’s time is the best in the state, regardless of class. It’s also tied for the fifth best time in state history.

“It’s just awesome,” Hedderman told 605 Sports. “There’s been huge competition and great meets and great fans. It’s so fun to run here and it’s fun to win. I got pushed by some people and everyone ran well. So it was fun.”

Hedderman clipped Fargo, North Dakota’s Trey Knoke (:14.38) for the win. Hedderman’s Class AA foe Tate Larson, of Harrisburg, was just behind at :14.73.

“I started off kind of slow, and then I kind of started picking it up and wanted a little bit of a better time,” Hedderman said. “But it will do and I won.”

Hedderman will be back at Howard Wood Field later this month, when he attempts to defend his state title in the 110-meter hurdles.

“I am just going to continue to try to build off of this and just try to continue to be the best I can,” commented Hedderman to 605 Sports, who will run collegiately at the University of South Dakota.

On the girls side,  for a second consecutive year Custer’s Ciana Stiefel dazzled the crowd in the pole vault at the Howard Wood Dakota Relays.

Stiefel cleared 12-9 on her third attempt, breaking her own meet record (12-7) set in 2023. The Custer junior took three attempts at (13-0) attempting to become the second South Dakota girl (Leslie Brost, Watertow 13-5.25).

In other girls action, Sturgis captured the 4×400 meter relay as Iris Zylstra, Hannah Kilinger, Novali Dinkins and Avery Marley finished in a time of 4:08.18. Spearfish won the 4×800 meter relay and fellow Spartan Peyton VanDeest captured the 3,200 meters.
