Howard Wood Relays open up Friday with field events

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The annual Howard Wood Relays opened Friday in Sioux Falls.

Friday’s highlights included field events where Kellyn Kortemeyer of Custer took to honors in the girls’ shot put. Kortemeyer’s throw at 45′, 7 and a quarter inches took first place.

In the javelin throw, Liam Porter finished in second.

In the two running events Friday evening, Simeon Birnbaum of Rapid City Sevens placed third in the boys’ 800-meter run in 1 minute, 55.72 seconds. Sean Korsmo of Bismarck won the race in 1:55.25 and Isaac Davelaer of Sioux Falls Christian was second in 1:55.48. Cody Farland of St. Thomas More was fifth in 1:57.28 and Keenan Urdiales of Spearfish was sixth in 1:57.75.

In the special girls’ 200, Caelyn Valandra-Prue of White River was fifth in 25.92 and Cerington Jones of New Underwood was eighth in 27.02.Holly Duax of Sioux City West won the race in 25.34.

Track events continue Saturday.

Meanwhile, area athletes also took part in the Sioux Falls O’Gorman Invite Track and Field meet Friday.

Area winners included Haleigh Timmer of St Thomas More in the Class A 100 meters, Jada McNabb of Rapid City Stevens in the Class AA 100 meters, Lucia Vidas of Stevens in the girls’ Class AA 800 meters, Baylee Van Zee of Stevens in the girls’ 100-meter hurdles, Aiden Giffin of Belle Fourche in the boys’ Class AA 100 meters, Willie Walther of Hill City in the Class A 200 meters, and Carl Massa of Hot Springs in the  Class A 400 meters.
